Chatham Township Announces Schedule for Repaving of River Road
The Township of Chatham has announced the tentative schedule for the River Road Improvement Project, with construction anticipated to begin on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The project encompasses milling, resurfacing, and infrastructure upgrades on River Road from Fairmount Avenue to Passaic Street. At the July 14, 2026 Township Committee meeting, the governing body adopted Resolution 2026-139, awarding the $462,767.50 contract to DLS Contracting, Inc.
“The Township of Chatham is dedicated to the continuous improvement of our capital infrastructure, despite the fiscal challenges that municipalities currently face,” said Township Administrator Ziad Andrew Shehady. “By actively procuring grants, like the $252,707.00 we secured from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for this specific project, we can ensure our roads remain safe and well-maintained while minimizing the tax impact on our residents.”
Construction hours will run from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The active section of River Road will be closed to through traffic during working hours, but local residential traffic and school buses will be permitted access. Contractor signage has been posted in the area, and informational notices were delivered to affected properties.

- Phase 1 (Starting Thursday, September 10): Mobilization and site work, including traffic control setup, inlet installation, and granite block curb work.
- Phase 2 (Starting Wednesday, September 16): Milling, necessary excavation, paving, and final roadway striping.
