Public Works
The Department of Public Works maintains the Townships streets, shade trees, storm and sanitary sewers, traffic signals, public parks, and buildings and grounds. The Department plows most municipal residential streets and uses outside contractors to supplement their work crews. County roads (Shunpike Road, Fairmount Avenue, Southern Boulevard, and Meyersville Road and a portion of River Road) are plowed by the Morris County Road Department.
CURBSIDE SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING
Collection is an included residential service paid for with local property taxes and provided through a shared-services agreement with the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority. Recycling collection occurs every other Friday. Click here for the schedule and additional important information. To ensure pickup, recyclables should be placed curbside the night before or before 5:00 AM.
GARBAGE COLLECTION
Homeowners hire a private contractor for garbage collection and are free to choose any licensed refuse hauler. The Township cannot endorse or recommend a contractor. Homeowners may want to do a search on the internet for local contractors or consult with neighbors for recommendations.
MULCH DELIVERY & PICK-UP
The Department of Public Works offers a convenient, mulch delivery service to your driveway for only $25/load (approximately 3 cubic yards). Mulch orders must be in person and accompanied by a check payment (payable to “Township of Chatham”) at the Department of Public Works Buildings. Ordering begins March 24, 2025. Deliveries run every Friday beginning April 4, 2025 to June 27, 2025 (except for holidays). Orders are taken on a first come, first serve basis. Mulch is free to town residents who wish to pick it up at the compost area when it is officially open.
PUBLIC UTILITIES
Chatham Township does not maintain or repair any public utilities such as water, electric or gas. The Township does not have jurisdiction over these companies and does not oversee or regulate their activities. For customer service issues and outages, do not contact Chatham Township municipal offices. We urge you to contact your utility company at the contact information on your utility bill with any problems or concerns. The utilities are private companies that fall under the regulation of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.
