Chatham Township Awarded $69,194 Grant to Expand Automated License Plate Recognition System
Chatham Township is proud to announce that it has been awarded a grant of $69,194 to expand its Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology system. Chatham was one of four jurisdictions in Morris County to receive this grant, which was made accessible through a competitive process administered by the State of New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety.
The funds will be used to acquire and expand the existing ALPR system to two more vital intersections within the township: Shunpike Road at Lafayette Avenue and Southern Boulevard at River Road. ALPR systems utilize high-speed, automated camera networks to assist law enforcement in identifying, locating, and recovering stolen vehicles; interrupting auto theft networks; and apprehending individuals involved in vehicle theft and other violent crimes.
Following the installation of these new cameras and a fiber optic loop funded by a separate federal grant, Chatham Township will have every significant intersection covered with real-time capabilities.
Mayor Ashley Felice stated, “We are grateful for the opportunity to enhance the safety of our community with this grant. The expansion of our ALPR system will not only help combat auto theft in Chatham Township but also reduce the violent crime it gives rise to.”
Police Chief Tom Miller added, “Our department is dedicated to protecting our residents and their property. This grant allows us to further strengthen our efforts in preventing and solving crimes, making Chatham Township an even safer place to live.”
This grant will play a crucial role in helping law enforcement agencies across New Jersey to combat auto theft and reduce the violent crime associated with it. Chatham Township is committed to working with its law enforcement partners to make the community a safer place for all.
