Inclement Weather Information
To ensure the safety of our members and staff, and to maintain responsible operations, The Colony Pool Club may adjust hours of operation due to inclement weather. The following safety policies provide the framework for determining delayed openings, temporary closures, or full-day closures due to bad weather.
Conditions That May Prompt Closure or Delay:
Severe Weather
- Thunder or lightning in the area (per state law, the pool will close and remain closed for 30 minutes after the last observed thunderclap or lightning strike).
- In the event of thunder or lightning, members will be asked to vacate the pool deck, beach, picnic areas, and lawns to take cover under the snack bar roof or within their own vehicles.
- High wind events, severe storm warnings, or falling debris risks.
- Unhealthy air quality (AQI over 150).
Rainfall (Forecasted or Active)
- During ordinary rainfall, the pool generally remains open provided:
- There is no thunder or lightning.
- Lifeguard visibility remains safe.
- Patron use justifies operation.
- Forecast-based closures may occur when:
- The hourly forecast shows a 60% or greater chance of rain for more than half of the day’s remaining operating hours, AND conditions are expected to impact visibility, safety, or attendance.
- Real-time radar and on-site conditions will also inform decisions. Forecasts alone do not trigger automatic closure—management discretion and actual weather patterns will guide final decisions.
Temperature
- The pool may delay opening or close for the day if:
- Air temperature is below 68°F at the scheduled opening time,
- AND there is no significant warm-up forecasted.
Timing of Closure or Delay Decisions
- Morning delays or full-day closures will generally be made by 9:00 AM.
- Afternoon decisions will be made on a rolling basis, ideally with at least one hour’s notice.
- Closures due to thunder/lightning will follow the 30-minute safety rule before reopening.
How Closures Are Communicated
- Members will be notified via:
- Email alerts.
- The Colony Pool Club Facebook page, when time and conditions allow.
- Signage at the gate, when time and conditions allow.

All closure and delay decisions are not made lightly and are decided by the Pool Manager in coordination with Township Administration, who together weigh factors such as weather forecasts and radar, real-time safety conditions, member attendance, and staff availability.
